What just happened? AMD's new Ryzen AI 300 series laptop chips are set to receive a major frame rate boost thanks to early driver support for the integrated Radeon 800M series. The company is releasing a preview of its AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 technology, which works in conjunction with Variable Graphics Memory, potentially delivering significant performance gains.
AFMF 2 is designed to leverage AI to generate additional frames, boosting in-game frame rates without requiring any modifications from the game developers. Initial figures suggest the tech can increase frame rates by approximately 40 percent on laptops equipped with the latest Ryzen AI chips, though performance gains will vary depending on the game.
However, AMD notes that games must achieve a baseline frame rate of 50 fps or higher for AFMF 2 to activate.
Cyberpunk 2077 appears to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of AFMF 2. AMD claims it can boost performance from 56 fps at 1080p/Low settings with FSR enabled to nearly 100 fps – a remarkable 78 percent increase. Meanwhile, Far Cry 6 can reportedly hit well over 70 fps at a 2,880 x 1,800 resolution with FSR enabled at Medium settings.
For now, the feature is in technical preview, but AMD plans to eventually integrate it into the Adrenalin Edition software.
Accompanying AFMF 2 is a new Variable Graphics Memory feature, which dynamically allocates additional system RAM to the graphics card as needed, effectively increasing available video memory. The feature intelligently adjusts memory allocation based on the demands of 3D applications.
AMD claims it can boost the Radeon 890M's dedicated VRAM from 512MB to a substantial 8GB on a laptop with 32GB of RAM.
According to AMD, enabling VGM allows games like Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy to run on Ryzen AI 300 series PCs by meeting the minimum VRAM requirements.
Keep in mind, you'll need to manually toggle VGM through AMD's Adrenalin software settings under the Performance tab.
That said, it's still early days, and we'll have to wait and see if these claims hold up. The projected performance figures sound impressive, but in our experience, frame generation tends to work best when frame rates are already above 90 fps. Expecting massive gains from laptop APU graphics might be optimistic – after all, this isn't the first time we've seen discrepanciesbetween AMD's promises and real-world performance.
