Something to look forward to: The Radeon RX 7800M is the first new laptop GPU AMD has released in almost a year. While it remains unclear how many high-end gaming notebooks will support it, a crowdfunding campaign for an external version of the chip revealed its specs late last month. It lands much closer to the flagship 7900M than its next-nearest neighbor.

The official Radeon RX 7800M specifications recently appeared on AMD's website. The new listing confirms the hardware specifications that manufacturer One-Netbook revealed in late August.

Utilizing the Navi 32 GPU, the 7800M makes modest compromises compared to the top-end RX 7900M, which Team Red introduced last October. The number of compute units falls from 72 to 60, though that is still almost twice as many as the next chip down the stack – the mainstream RX 7600M XT. It's also the same number of CUs featured in Sony's recently unveiled PlayStation 5 Pro but it remains to be seen if the 7800M will closely align with the premium console's performance.

The new high-end mobile card boasts a game frequency of 2.1GHz and 12 GB of GDDR6 RAM with a maximum bandwidth of 432 GB/s. Compared to the flagship part, the number of ROPs diminishes by nearly half, from 192 to 96. However, the 7800M maintains the same 180W TDP as its bigger sibling.

Paired with a 1440p display or a high-refresh-rate 1080p screen, the GPU will likely provide an excellent experience when playing recent and upcoming blockbuster games. However, it remains unclear how many laptop vendors will support the 7800M or how much their systems will cost.

One-Netbook revealed some preliminary specs when it introduced its Indiegogo campaign for the OneXGPU 2, an external GPU that leverages the 7800M to boost the capabilities of low-end laptops or handheld gaming PCs. The company claimed the product runs Black Myth: Wukong over 60fps at 3,440 x 1,440 resolution under the "high" graphics preset. Other big-budget titles like the 2018 God of War and Red Dead Redemption can maintain over 60fps with maximum settings at 1,600p and 1,200p, respectively.

However, interested customers should view One-Netbooks numbers with caution. TechSpot and other sites plan to publish comprehensive reviews of laptops featuring the 7800M soon.
