What just happened? Apple has unveiled the full feature set for iOS 18, showcasing not only the company's foray into generative AI but also a wide array of enhancements. While beta versions have offered glimpses of the new functionality, the comprehensive list reveals features that range from user interface improvements and expanded messaging capabilities to innovative photo editing tools.

Ever since Apple introduced iOS 18 at WWDC 2024, we've known that the new operating system would significantly upgrade the core iPhone apps. We've also known that new AI tools will be included for certain models, such as the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 line. We didn't know exactly when the new software would launch until recently, when Apple announced the release date of September 16.

To date, we've only received a hint of what iOS 18 looks like through the various betas. For example, Apple Intelligence has been available in beta on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models, sporting functionality such as the clean-up tool in Photos, which is similar to Google's Magic Eraser, notification summaries to filter less important messages, new image creation capabilities called Genmojis, and writing tools for summarization. Now, though, Apple has released a full list of all the features that will be included in iOS 18.

Apple considers the Photos app's redesign in iOS 18 the biggest ever. It describes it as a simplified, unified layout that puts everything in a single view, with the photo grid at the top and automatically organized collections below. A new button in the grid filters to specific media types and can hide screenshots from the view. And Utilities now supports new content types like documents, receipts, handwriting, illustrations, and QR codes.

Messages via satellite will also be available, joining the existing satellite features. Users can message people directly from the Messages app without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage when off the grid. You are prompted to connect to the nearest satellite right from the app when there's no other connectivity available.

Another feature, Game Mode, minimizes background activity for the highest frame rates. AirPod users will be able to respond to Siri announcements by nodding their heads for yes or shaking their heads for no. And Notes users will be able to edit while recording.

CarPlay has expanded its audio capabilities to include Spatial Audio support in vehicles with compatible systems. Additionally, Spatial Audio functionality has been extended to AirPlay streaming.

The biggest addition will be Apple Intelligence, with many new features to roll out over time, such as the Image Playground app. This allows you to create new images and remix previous images. For example, you can choose from a range of concepts in categories such as themes, costumes, accessories, and places to enhance your photos. You can also add a character to your images by choosing their gender and skin tone and by providing a short description.

The writing tools in Apple Intelligence are also extensive. You can create multiple versions of the text in various tones, rewrite the text in a new style, such as "professional," "concise," or "friendly," and even make more dramatic changes, such as rewriting the text as a poem. Together, the changes represent a significant update to the iPhone experience.
