Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall RESIGNS after difficult start to season

Jonas Eidevall has resigned as Arsenal Women head coach following the club’s disappointing start to the season.

The Gunners have won just one of their four Women’s Super League games and were thrashed 5-2 by Bayern Munich in their opening Champions League group match.

One Arsenal supporter took a fake P45 to the Emirates on Saturday, where Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by rivals Chelsea, while there was also ‘Jonas Out’ graffiti spotted nearby the stadium.

Mail Sport understands that as well as facing criticism from fans, Eidevall had lost the Arsenal dressing room.

Commenting on the boos he and his team had faced after Saturday’s defeat by Chelsea, Eidevall said: ‘I fully understand that people are disappointed when we don’t win football matches and we are also really disappointed.

‘We are really hurting, I’m hurting, the players are hurting. We want to do that better so I fully understand that in that moment. Just as you’re allowed to show emotions when we win, you’re allowed to show emotions when you lose.

‘They invest everything, they travel, they support us, they give us absolutely everything. I totally understand their frustration when we don’t win football matches.’

The club are already five points behind WSL leaders Manchester City and four points behind Chelsea, who have played a game less.

Assistant coach Renee Slegers has been placed in charge of the team on an interim basis.

A statement from sporting director Edu Gaspar said: ‘We thank Jonas for his commitment to the club and achievements here since joining us in 2021.

‘We have great respect for the dedication and commitment he showed to our women’s first team and recognise the role he has played in the growth and development of Arsenal Women.

‘We all wish him the very best for the future.

‘Our focus will now turn to the process of appointing a new Head Coach, and in the meantime, supporting Renee, as she takes interim charge of the team starting with two important fixtures this week.’

Slegers will take charge of the Champions League game with Valerenga and West Ham before the international break.
