The Asus Zenbook S 16 stands as an example of what x86 can do in this new era of Windows laptops.

The Asus Zenbook S16 is a pretty showcase for AMD's Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, with an attractive design with a spacious touchpad, not to mention strong performance. But its display could be slightly brighter, and Arm-based laptops have better battery life.

Not all Copilot+ PCs are the same, and the Asus Zenbook S 16 proves that. AMD Ryzen AI 9 beats Snapdragon X Elite and Apple silicon in some areas like graphics and app compatibility, and the delicious design paired with stellar ergonomics make this a solid laptop. But it's high heat and lower power efficiency make a strong case for Arm being the real future of Windows laptops — not x86.

Whether it was basic productivity tasks, demanding graphics benchmarks, or advanced AI workloads, the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 proved a worthy contender in the ongoing AI laptop title fight. It consistently delivered top scores in this first taster, but the efficiency and capability improvements delivered by AMD's new NPU hardware are perhaps the most exciting thing we've seen in the relatively new AI device category.

The Ryzen AI 300 series, including the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370, looks set to ignite a 'battle of the TOPS' where Generative AI performance is concerned among the main chip makers. Still, now that we've got Zen 5 in mobile, it'll be time soon to pivot towards Zen 5 for desktop, with the launch of the Ryzen 9000 series coming fast. In fact, it's in less than two weeks ever since AMD delayed the launch, so it'll be interesting to see how Zen 5 compares to Zen 4 on the desktop, which is certainly a much hotter battleground.
