The Audacity 3.6 release in July brought some masterful new features with it, plus all-new Compressor and Limiter filters.
But not everyone was pleased to lose access to the older version of those, so Audacity’s devs have brought ’em back in a point release update to the currently Audacity 3.6 stable series.
Those who prefer (or just more used to) the original Limiter, Compressor and Classic filters can access them in Audacity 3.6.2 from the new “Legacy” effects section. They’re available to use with new and existing Audacity projects.
Audacity 3.6.2 also resolves a sizeable set of bugs, with fixes including:
- Tracks with master effects sometimes exports only silence
- Audacity maxing out the CPU when minimized
- Application sometimes freezing after using undo
- Audacity window turning white on some systems
- Pitch indicator disappearing on Linux when hitting double digits
- The ‘cut’ action not putting clips into the clipboard
- The ‘paste’ action resetting a clip name
- Track header UI breaking when channels in a stereo track resized
- LV2 plugin detection on macOS & Windows
- Cloud projects sometimes not opening.
- Bug affecting stereo-to-mono splitting
Plus plenty more besides (and while the above bug list does make it sound like this app was unusable previously, it wasn’t; most of the bugs/crashes/quirks didn’t affect every user, only occurred under specific conditions, etc).
If you’re using Audacity 3.6 you’ll want to make sure you install this update as soon as you’re able (that will vary depending on packaging format) to ensure a smooth(er), stable(r) overall experience while editing.
For more details, or to download this popular free, open-source audio editor, hit up the Audacity website where, for Linux, the app is available as an AppImage.
Although you will find Audacity on Flathub be aware that is not an official package, and neither is the Audacity snap (which hasn’t been updated since 2022 but Ubuntu’s App Center defaults to suggesting when users search for ‘Audacity’).
