Barcelona 'among THREE European giants eyeing up Mason Greenwood move'

Barcelona are one of 'three European giants eyeing up a move for Mason Greenwood' as the Marseille striker attracts interest following a blistering start to the campaign.

Greenwood completed a £30million move to the French side from Manchester United in July after spending a season on loan at Getafe. However, the transfer was marred by controversy.

The forward was arrested in January 2022 for allegations of attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour. Charges were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service following the 'withdrawal of key witnesses and new material coming to light'.

Nevertheless, Marseille fans still harboured their own reservations while the city's mayor Benoit Payan publicly opposed the signing of Greenwood during the summer.

Now it seems the Englishman might already be set for another move after his performances, which have seen him score five and assist one in just four games, piqued the interest of some of the continent's top clubs, TalkSport reports.

Champions League challengers Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich have all reportedly sent scouts to watch the 22-year-old in action in the south of France - and have presumably been impressed with what they have seen.

The Spanish sides are thought to have first tracked the forward towards the end of 2023 after his displays for Getafe earned him plaudits.

Greenwood ended up scoring ten and assisting six goals in his first season back after the arrest.

More recently, German giants Bayern have been keeping an eye on the Marseille man, potentially with a view to him forming a striker partnership in Bavaria with countryman Harry Kane.

Last week, president of the French side Pablo Longoria said that Roberto de Zerbi asked to sign Greenwood during his first conversation with the board after being appointed as their manager in June.

Speaking about the decision at the Thinking Football Summit, he added: 'We took the decision internally.

'OK, there was some opposition, that was objective, but at the same time that gave us power to maybe not investigate, because I am not a judge, but to use all the information to take the best decision, which I think we did.'

Greenwood has largely kept a low media profile since leaving United, but beamed as he was unveiled as the club's star player of the month after an impressive start in France.

'It's been my first month here and it's amazing to win this award and first of all I want to thank the fans who voted me, I appreciate that a lot,' he told Marseille's official X account.

Some of the Marseille fans were concerned about signing the former Man United player

'Without my team-mates and the coaching staff and everyone at the club helping me this award wouldn't be possible. I came here in the middle of pre-season and got a good connection straight away and we showed that in the first game against Brest.

'We are getting more comfortable as the games go on, are in a good position in the league and want to keep moving forward. It's amazing I have never really experienced a crowd like that before, I have played in a lot of stadiums in Europe and this has been the loudest one,' he added.

Only Man City's Erling Haaland has scored more than Greenwood in Europe's top five leagues and the one-time England international will be hoping to add to his impressive tally when his side face Lyon at the Groupama Stadium on Sunday.
