I test a lot of electric scooters and e-bikes for CNET, and I do it all while wearing a helmet. Just because I've found one that I like doesn't mean I'm not always on the lookout for others to recommend. For instance, I was recently introduced to the $330 Beam Virgo Integral MIPS helmet, which has several features that immediately caught my attention to upgrade safety.

A full helmet with facial protection is best for traveling at higher speeds (plus, I appreciate the design). Like a cross between a traditional bike helmet and a full-face motorcycle helmet, the Virgo Integral helmet is excellent because it minimizes vision and ventilation blockage. Additionally, the openings around the ears enhance awareness of your surroundings, making it safer to use in traffic and around pedestrians.

The helmet even features a removable mirrored visor that can be raised or lowered, providing eye protection from dirt, dust, bugs, rain and cold winds. Also included is a USB-C-rechargeable light with a built-in accelerometer that mounts at the back of the helmet, making riders more visible in low-light situations. The removable light can be set to either flash or stay steady. When it's flashing, and you slow down or brake, the light automatically switches to steady, acting as a brake light.

The Virgo Integral is not all about looks. It offers solid protection constructed from an ABS monobloc shell and Inmold EPS liner and is available with a Multi-directional Impact Protection System for increased safety. The helmet's interior is designed to shift and minimize trauma to the skull. It also comes with various fabric pads for customization. The Virgo is specifically designed for e-bikes and scooters and is rated for speeds up to 28 mph (45 kph).

The helmet features excellent ventilation, making it a suitable all-weather option. During colder months, you can easily wear a skully or bandana underneath. The adjustable fitting system lets users quickly loosen or tighten the helmet for a perfect fit with just a few twists of a knob.

The Virgo Integral is incredibly lightweight, weighing just over a pound (600 grams). It allows you to ride safely and feel protected. It's definitely one of the lighter full-face helmets I've tested. The interior padding around the head and face isn't obtrusive like some helmets, and it's overall a comfortable fit. The front bar is positioned to ensure your safety if you fall and hit your face. The chin strap also includes extra padding so you don't clip your neck.

The Virgo Integral includes a helmet bag to protect it from scratches during travel or storage. The bag also conveniently stores the light and charging cables when they're not in use. To top it off, the helmet is available in four colors and can be purchased with or without a visor.

This helmet is perfect for those who want full head, eye and face protection rather than just covering the skull. The price might be justified for someone who regularly rides in traffic, but there's no denying it's expensive. Preorders are available now, with shipping scheduled for November 2024.
