Brentford 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday (5-4 on pens): Bees into last eight

Brentford are through to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after beating Sheffield Wednesday 5-4 in a penalty shootout at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Premier League side took the lead in the 11th minute courtesy of Kevin Schade's first goal of the season.

Schade benefitted from a lucky deflection off defender Gabriel Otegbayo and was left with an easy finish after Pierce Charles had saved the Brentford forward's initial shot.

But the club currently 13th in the Championship hit back just before the hour-mark when Djeidi Gassama found the net from the best part of 30 yards.

With the scores level after 90 minutes, a penalty shootout was needed.

The first nine penalties all went in before Liam Palmer, on his 450th appearance for the Owls, was denied by Bees keeper Mark Flekken.

More to follow.

But Wednesday legend Palmer, on his 450th appearance for the club, failed to beat Flekken
