Alex Greenwood admitted that ‘sometimes you have to win ugly’ after her side edged past Brighton.
Last season’s WSL Golden Boot winner Bunny Shaw netted her first of the season in the 44th minute and that proved enough to secure the win.
‘We got the job done,’ said Greenwood. ‘Sometimes in this league you have to win ugly.
‘I thought off the ball we were better. We have worked really hard on that, and I thought we saw an improvement.
‘This league is getting tougher and tougher every year, and we saw that with Brighton. It was a tough game. We take the win and the clean sheet all day.’
Alex Greenwood praised her side's ability to scrape out a win and noted the ever-improving quality of the WSL
Meanwhile, this Sunday’s clash between Chelsea and Manchester United has been postponed on the grounds of player welfare — despite the fixture having already sold out.
Women’s Professional Leagues Ltd (WPLL), the company in charge of the top two tiers of the game, took the decision due to the scheduling of Chelsea’s Champions League matches.
The group-stage draw was only made last Friday, with the fixtures released on Saturday, and UEFA announced Chelsea would play Real Madrid a week tomorrow — just two days after their game with United, which was due to be broadcast live on Sky Sports.
Both Chelsea and the WPLL asked UEFA to move the Blues’ fixture back but the governing body, who released their match calendar over a year ago, stood by their decision.
