Can Lee Carsley emulate Southgate and land England job full-time?

Stepping up from his role as England Under 21s boss, Lee Carsley becomes only the eighth caretaker manager in England's 152-year history.

He is in decent company, too, given the man he is replacing (at least for now), Gareth Southgate, took a similar path and ended up taking the top job.

Not everyone has made such a success of their temporary stint, though.

Mail Sport runs through the Three Lions' best, and worst, interim bosses…

Joe Mercer: 1974

With 1966 hero Sir Alf Ramsey out after failing to lead England to the 1974 World Cup, 'Genial Joe' was handed the reins.

He won his first two games against Wales and Northern Ireland but an underwhelming three-game European tour followed.

Mercer proved a hit with the players, but the FA had their sights on top target Don Revie.

Ron Greenwood: 1977

West Ham boss Greenwood was drafted into the job following Revie's sudden departure to the UAE.

Despite 2-0 wins over Luxembourg and Italy, England failed to qualify for the 1978 World Cup.

The FA ignored public clamour for Brian Clough to give Greenwood the job on a permanent basis.

England were knocked out of the Euro 1980 group stages and in the second group stage of the 1982 World Cup, before Greenwood retired.

Howard Wilkinson: 1999-2000

Wilkinson, then the FA's technical director, was drafted in to replace Glenn Hoddle in February 1999.

He took charge of a friendly against world champions France, which ended in a 2-0 defeat, and within days Kevin Keegan was appointed manager.

Wilkinson later returned to the role for one game after Keegan resigned.

Kevin Keegan: 1999-2000

Keegan combined his role as manager of Fulham with his temporary gig as England boss in 1999.

He won his first game 3-1 against Poland and led Fulham to promotion later that season.

He was soon given the job permanently and helped England qualify for Euro 2000. However, a disappointing tournament saw England fail to make it out of their group.

Keegan resigned in the Wembley toilets after losing to Germany in October 2000.

Peter Taylor: 2000

With the FA needing cover following Keegan's exit, former England Under 21s boss Taylor was left in charge for a friendly against Italy.

The game ended in a 1-0 defeat but will be remembered for Taylor handing the captain's armband to David Beckham for the first time before Sven Goran Eriksson became England's first foreign boss.

Stuart Pearce: 2012

Appointed temporary coach following Fabio Capello's departure and took charge of one game: a 3-2 friendly defeat by the Netherlands at Wembley in February 2012.

Gareth Southgate: 2016

Undoubtedly the most successful interim boss.

Eight years, two major tournament finals and the third-best record of any England manager

Drafted in for four games following Sam Allardyce's humiliating exit, Southgate went unbeaten before landing the job permanently.

The rest is history. Eight years, two major tournament finals and the third-best record of any England manager.
