Carsley sends message to Rashford & Maddison after England squad snub

England interim manager Lee Carsley has told Marcus Rashfordand James Maddison that they will be considered for selection in the future despite missing out on a place in his squad for next month's Nations League games against Ireland and Finland.

Carsley included the likes of Angel Gomes, Tino Livramento, Morgan Gibbs-White and Noni Madueke in his first squad on Thursday.

But there was no place for Manchester United striker Rashford, 26, or 27-year-old Tottenham playmaker Maddison. The pair were also omitted from Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 party earlier this summer.

Speaking to the media after announcing his squad, Carsley said: 'Rash and Maddison? There are players ahead of them.

On Chelsea winger Madueke - who scored a hat-trick in a 6-2 win at Wolves on Sunday - Carsley added: 'He has done really well for the U21s and I think he will be really important in this camp.

'He will bring energy. we are coming off the back of a losing final and may need an injection of energy and enthusiasm. The new players will bring that.'

Maddison has been capped seven times at senior international level since making his Three Lions debut in 2019.

Meanwhile, Rashford has scored 17 goals in 60 appearances for his country.

England are in the second tier of the Nations League for the first time following their relegation during the previous campaign.

As well as facing Ireland and Finland in Group B2, England will play home and away against Greece.
