CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND-UP: Rooney's Plymouth fall to defeat

It will be a very unhappy birthday for Wayne Rooney, whose Plymouth side were beaten 1-0 at Millwall on Wednesday night.

Romain Esse’s 13th-minute goal secured all three points for the hosts and consigned Plymouth to their sixth defeat of the campaign.

The goal came as a result of a Plymouth mistake. Bali Mumba was caught in possession by 19-year-old winger Esse, who charged through the centre and played a one-two with George Honeyman before firing home.

Rooney’s side have now picked up just one point and scored only one goal on their travels. The result extended their winless run at Millwall to 17 visits, going back to 1967.

Zian Flemming’s first goal for Burnley rescued a point after Hull had threatened a surprise win.

Xavier Simons opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time before Flemming powered home a header from 12 yards to keep Scott Parker’s side in the top two, three points behind leaders Sunderland.

The 25-year-old, who hit 16 Championship goals last season, had not scored since the opening-day win over Swansea but his bullet header sent the Riverside Stadium wild. Boro move up to eighth, with the Blades two points ahead in fifth.

Blackburn and West Brom played out a goalless draw at Ewood Park which keeps both sides level on points in the play-off zone.
