Chelsea 1-2 Real Madrid PLAYER RATINGS: Nkunku was a constant threat

Chelsea's pre-season tour of the United States ended with another defeat as Real Madrid secured a 2-1 victory in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Goals from Brahim Diaz and Lucas Vazquez put the Champions League winners in control inside 30 minutes. Noni Madueke halved the deficit before halftime but Enzo Maresca's side were unable to avoid defeat.

Mail Sport's Kieran Gill was on hand in North Carolina and you can read his player ratings below.

CHELSEA (4-2-3-1)

Filip Jorgensen – 6

Started for Chelsea for the first time ahead of a season in which he hopes to become No 1, but was not helped by his defence here as Real regularly threatened to score.

Reece James – 5

Up against Vinicius Junior, James survived conceding a penalty when he challenged from behind, but the Real superstar usually got the better of him in one-v-ones.

Benoit Badiashile – 5

Had to chase back several balls in behind as Chelsea’s high line was constantly exposed, a single pass setting away their opponents’ speedy players.

Levi Colwill – 5

Made a fair few mistakes, including some laziness when retreating as Real opened the scoring. Like Badiashile, Colwill was constantly beaten by a single pass in behind.

Malo Gusto – 6

Worried Chelsea when he was on the ground twice in pain but thankfully fine to play on. Played Sterling in behind after inverting, but perfect pass wasn’t rewarded with a goal.

Romeo Lavia – 6

Started all five of Chelsea’s friendlies after hardly featuring last campaign because of injury and with each performance, he’s looked more and more composed as a deep playmaker.

Enzo Fernandez – 6.5

Cross to the back post for Madueke saw Chelsea get a goal back as he picked up pockets of space to receive the ball. Took the captain’s armband after James’s substitution.

Noni Madueke – 7

Wiped out at one stage by Antonio Rudiger, who did not get the memo that this was merely a friendly, and headed home Fernandez’s cross to make it 2-1.

Christopher Nkunku – 6.5

The most important news is that, unlike last summer, Nkunku has come through this tour unscathed. Nearly equalised for 2-2 at the start of the second half as he was a constant threat.

Raheem Sterling – 5

Had several chances to score, which was good, but took none of them, which was unfortunate. Overhit pass through the six-yard box found no one. Not his day.

Marc Guiu – 6

Annoyed his team-mates when he stalled one move by passing backwards in the first half, but began to get more involved in sequences in the second half.

SUBS

Mykhailo Mudryk (for Sterling, 58) – 6

Ran the length of the pitch but when it came to the big moment of scoring, he skied it.

Moises Caicedo (for Lavia, 58) – 6

Tenacious even in a friendly, sitting alongside Fernandez after replacing Lavia.

Enzo Maresca hopes Chelsea will be ready for the start of the Premier League season

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (for Marc Guiu, 66) – 6

Perfect player for Maresca as he knows his system inside out, and you can see that on the pitch.

Wesley Fofana (for James, 70) – 6

Replaced James which meant he played the last 20 minutes as Chelsea’s right back.

MANAGER

Enzo Maresca – 6

Defeat in his fifth and final friendly of this United States tour, but progress is being made and he hopes Chelsea will be ready for the start of the Premier League season.
