Chelsea swoop for key Crystal Palace backroom staff member

Chelsea have continued the shake-up of their medical department by moving for Crystal Palace doctor Andrew Shafik.

The Stamford Bridge side are in the midst of revamping their medical team, with Shafik their latest appointment.

Chelsea hired former Bournemouth medical director Craig Roberts, who has also worked with South Africa Rugby, to become their new head of performance medicine earlier this summer.

Roberts replaced Dimitrios Kalogiannidis, who left in January after nearly 15 years at the west London club.

Chelsea have also appointed Stephen Lewis, who spent 12 years at Fulham, into the role of first-team doctor, while Meirion Jones has been appointed into the role of lead performance therapist.

Chelsea are signing Crystal Palace doctor Andrew Shafik to work largely with their academy

Shafik arrives with a prominent focus on Chelsea’s academy. He becomes the latest medical practitioner to leave Crystal Palace following the departure of head doctor Zafar Iqbal left Selhurst Park last season.

Iqbal was replaced by Dr Imitiaz Ahmad, who left Queens Park Rangers to take up the role as head of sports medicine and science at Selhurst Park.
