Chelsea's Marc Guiu insists 'I'm ready to be on the pitch'

Chelsea's new 18-year-old striker Marc Guiu does not yet know if he will be sent out on loan next season, but says he is ready to handle the physicality of the Premier League if allowed to stay.

Guiu has featured in all four of Chelsea's friendlies in the United States since signing from Barcelona for £5million, starting three of those matches as he backs himself to compete with Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku for the striker position.

Guiu's modest release clause was considered a steal by Chelsea and the No 9 has impressed in his pre-season performances, particularly with how he can hold up the ball considering his age.

Speaking in Catalan via a translator, the graduate from Barcelona's famous La Masia academy said: 'He (Maresca) told me there was an amazing sporting project full of young talent, that he wanted me to be a part of it and that he had a lot of faith in me and my skills and capabilities.

'I think I'm ready (for the Premier League). We work very hard every day both on and off the pitch, on the physical aspect and the practical. So I think I'm ready to be on the pitch.'

Guiu spoke with Juliano Belletti – the former Chelsea full back who now coaches with Barcelona's B team – before signing as he weighed up whether this was the right move for him.

Asked if he has been told if he will be sent away on loan to gain experience, Guiu said: 'I'm just focused on the pre-season tour, doing my best and that's what I can say.

'It was a tough decision (to leave Barcelona) but I always wanted to play in the Premier League and this was an amazing opportunity, so I had to go for it.

'It was not an issue with my contract. I've always dreamt of playing in the Premier League and Chelsea is a great club with a lot of history.

'I'm very happy I'm at the club. It's an amazing experience. I'm trying to do my best and get the best out of me.'
