Czech winger Cerny agrees loan move to Rangers

Rangers have secured Czech winger Vaclav Cerny on a season-long loan from Wolfsburg.

The 26-year-old becomes manager Philippe Clement’s seventh summer signing and will give the Belgian further options on the flank after Abdallah Sima returned to parent club Brighton.

Cerny has 17 caps and played once for his country at Euro 2024, in the 1-1 group-stage draw with Georgia

He made only 14 starts in his first season for Wolfsburg, however, after moving from Dutch side Twente a year ago, with his new club eventually finishing 12th in the Bundesliga.

Predicting that Cerny could go from strength to strength during his stay in Glasgow, Clement said: ‘I am delighted to welcome Vaclav to the squad, he is an exciting player, with valuable experience in European football.

‘He has already shown his attacking qualities during his time in the Eredivisie and at Wolfsburg and he will further strengthen our attacking options in the squad.

‘I feel as a club and staff we can continue to help him as a player to reach new levels and I am excited to see what the season holds for him at Rangers.’

Cerny came through the ranks at Ajax and scored for the Amsterdam club in a Europa League match against Celtic in 2015.

‘It is a very nice day for me. I am happy to be here and I can’t wait to get started,’ he told Rangers’ official website.

‘Obviously from the first talks with the manager, it gave me a very good feeling and from there on I would say it went pretty fast.

‘I was happy about the contact and just couldn’t wait to be here and experience it all.’

The winger is Clement’s seventh summer signing following Jefte, Clinton Nsiala, Connor Barron, Liam Kelly, Hamza Igamane and Oscar Cortes returning on loan.

A summer of transition has seen John Lundstram, Borna Barisic, Kemar Roofe and Ryan Jack move on.

Connor Goldson looks set to sign for Aris Limassol, James Tavernier is wanted by Besiktas and Todd Cantwell has handed in a transfer request.
