Docker updates pricing to simplify access to products through a single subscription model

Container development tooling provider Docker Inc. said today that it’s updating its pricing structure for developers and organizations to streamline how users access the company’s product suite.

Under the new pricing, users will get access to Docker’s services including Docker Hub, Desktop, Trusted Content, Scout, Build Cloud and Testcontainers Cloud all under a single subscription.

“Before people had to go through multiple purchasing journeys and add seats for the different features, now they get access to everything,” Docker Chief Product Officer Giri Sreenivas told SiliconANGLE in an interview.

The company provides plans that include a free subscription called Docker Personal, which remains unchanged. Adjustments are being made to Docker Pro, which is moving from $5 to $9 per month, and Docker Team, shifting from $9 to $15 per month for annual subscriptions. Docker Business pricing also remains unchanged at $24 per month.

Docker Hub is a cloud-based service that allows users to find, store and share container images. These are files that store all the code, data, libraries and dependencies needed to run a software application. As part of the pricing change, Giri said, Docker is introducing image pull and storage limits to Hub.

“The new Docker Hub changes will only affect less than 3% of organizations, who will have to purchase more resources,” he explained.

The objective of the changes is to help address the needs of the company’s growing developer audience, which exceeds 20 million active users. It also coincides with Docker expanding its lineup of products over the past 12 months, which has generated some growing pains and feedback from the developer community who would benefit from greater access to these tools.

“With today’s announcement Docker has repositioned itself from a vendor of developer tools to an end-to-end platform laser-focused on optimizing developer productivity,” said Torsten Volk of Enterprise Strategy Group. “Offering Docker’s entire developer toolchain as a single platform aims to simplify access to the overall range of developer tools, allowing individual developers and large engineering teams to simplify, automate, and streamline the application development lifecycle in a collaborative manner.”

Docker Desktop provides a containerization launchpad with advanced security features and cloud-native tools making it easy for developers to build, deploy and administer projects from their workstations. Debuted in January, Docker Build Cloud enables faster and more efficient builds across projects with reduced build times. The company said it has significantly increased build minutes for the Pro, Team and Business plans.

An outgrowth from the acquisition of AtomicJar Inc., Testcontainers Cloud, now included with discounts for Pro, Team and Business users, makes testing workflows easy by minimizing setup and teardown times by allowing developers to focus on their work.

With the new plans, Docker will offer unlimited continuous vulnerability analysis via Scout through the Team and Business plans. Scout provides health scores to assist users in maintaining security and compliance.

The new subscription plans will officially launch on Nov. 1 along with greater access to all Docker products with varying features, adjusted usage limits and service levels.

Alongside these existing tools, Docker is officially launching a new backend tool currently in preview with select customers: Insights Dashboards. This tool provides visibility into the most commonly used images with the ability to monitor, optimize and understand the development process.
