Eagles Trade Up for Cooper DeJean at No. 40
The Philadelphia Eagles selected cornerback Cooper DeJean from Iowa with the 40th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Eagles traded up 10 spots with the Washington Commanders to secure the selection. In exchange, the Eagles gave up the 50th, 53rd, and 161st picks, while the Commanders received the 40th, 78th, and 152nd picks.
DeJean, 21, was a two-year starter at Iowa, where he recorded seven interceptions, 13 passes defensed, and a touchdown as a punt returner. He is known for his ball skills, athleticism, and versatility.
NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein describes DeJean as "highly competitive" with "plus ball skills" and "noteworthy special teams value." He notes DeJean's size, muscularity, and playmaking ability, but also highlights the need to find the right schematic fit for him in the NFL.
With the addition of DeJean and first-round pick Quinyon Mitchell, the Eagles now have two young defensive backs to bolster their secondary. DeJean's versatility could allow him to play outside cornerback, nickel cornerback, or safety.
The Eagles still have six more picks remaining in the draft to address other needs, including offensive tackle, linebacker, edge rusher, and safety.
