England squad pictured in good spirits ahead of Ireland clash

The England squad have been pictured looking in good spirits ahead of new manager Lee Carsley's first match in charge against the Republic of Ireland.

Arriving at the side's base in Burton-on-Trent, stars such as Bukayo Saka and Jack Grealish, who was recalled after missing out on Euro 2024, had smiles on their faces as they prepared for an early-season international break.

Carsley, who was appointed last month, will make his Three Lions bow at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin in a Nations League clash on Saturday night.

His first home match promises to be a slightly less raucous affair against Finland at Wembley three days later.

And his chargers have been spotted with their suitcases and washbags turning up at St George's Park this afternoon ahead of training for the two important fixtures, with many hoping to become early favourites of the new boss.

Newer faces including Newcastle's Tino Livramento also looked delighted to be there

Grealish gave the camera a cheeky grin as he wheeled not one but two suitcases into the reception at the base.

The Man City star previously revealed he was 'absolutely heartbroken' to be left out of Gareth Southgate's squad this summer but a solid start to the new season has put him in the new manager's plans.

Arsenal's Saka meanwhile is typically pictured with a beaming smile and today was no different as the winger hauled four bags into the Burton training camp after a great first three matches this campaign which included a goal against Wolves.

Newer faces including Newcastle's Tino Livramento, Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, Lille's Angel Gomes, Chelsea's Noni Madueke, and City's Rico Lewis also looked delighted to be there as they stepped out of fancy 4x4s and swish sports cars and into the building.

Incredibly, a whopping six players chosen in this month's squad featured in the under-21 side, coached by Carsley, which won the 2023 Euros thanks to a 1-0 win ove Spain.

Gibbs-White, Gomes and Madueke, as well as Chelsea's Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill and Newcastle's Anthony Gordon, all appeared that day for the Three Lions.

And with most of England's stars decked out in designer clothes and clutching name-brand bags, Gordon's approach of carrying his garments in a black bin bag provided a sharp contrast with that of his teammates.

Marcus Rashford and Kyle Walker were among the most notable omissions from Carsley's first England squad selection ahead of the upcoming Nations League fixtures.

At Euro 2024, Alexander-Arnold started the first two games in midfield, before Gareth Southgate decided to replace him

One player who was not available for selection was Kieran Trippier, who announced his retirement from England duty last week after picking up 54 caps during his career.

Ben White's absence from the squad continues despite Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland no longer being part of the coaching staff.

Jude Bellingham was another player not available for selection after picking up an injury with Real Madrid.

Other players who made the Euro 2024 squad but have been left out, include Aaron Ramsdale, Luke Shaw, Lewis Dunk, Joe Gomez, Adam Wharton and Ivan Toney.

In his first squad announcement press conference, Carsley said that he wanted to 'put my own stamp on the squad' and vows to ask players to 'play to their strengths'.

Regarding the omission of Walker, Carsley said: 'I wanted to put a mark on the squad. Kyle hasn't played this season. City are phasing him in gently and we have to respect that.'

Addressing the inclusions of Gibbs-White and Gomes, both part of Carsley's U21 teams in the past, Carsley added: 'Morgan is attacking, full of energy and with a great attitude. Excellent work rate. Lots of the players I have called in are used to winning.

'Angel is different to what we have seen in central midfield before. He controls the game with skill and technique rather than by being robust.'

In his role as England interim boss, one of the key roles he will have is trying to get the best out of Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold - something Southgate was unable to accomplish.

At Euro 2024, Alexander-Arnold started the first two games in midfield, before Southgate decided to replace him.

Lee Carsley's 26-man squad

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Levi Colwill, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Rico Lewis, Tino Livramento, Harry Maguire, John Stones

Midfielders: Phil Foden, Conor Gallagher, Morgan Gibbs-White, Angel Gomes, Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer, Declan Rice

Forwards: Jarrod Bowen, Eberechi Eze, Jack Grealish, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, Noni Madueke, Bukayo Saka, Ollie Watkins

Asked about what position suits the Liverpool vice-captain best, Carsley said: 'For me and for this camp he will be a right-back. Modern day full backs have all round attributes that almost make them midfielders. At some point we will see TAA arriving in to that midfield area but for me I see him as a right-back.'

The former Everton midfielder was announced as the interim England boss after a four-week search for a replacement for Southgate, who took the national team to two Euros finals in eight successful years at the helm.

It remains to be seen who will take the role long-term but Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has been heavily linked with the job and remained cagey over his future ahead of last weekend's 2-1 victory over Tottenham in the Premier League.
