Ex-Man United star will take on club's Under-21 team in free agent XI

Several high-profile free agents will take on Manchester United's U21 team in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, with one former wonderkid returning to the club.

United's academy youngsters are attempting to pit themselves against senior opposition and will play an 18-man team packed with free agents representing the Professional Footballers Association.

Players still without a club ahead of the new professional leagues in England getting underway will be looking to use the opportunity to showcase their talents to scouts that will be in attendance.

The match will be played behind-closed-doors and one of the players featuring for the free agent XI will find himself taking on a side he previously rose to fame at.

Ravel Morrison was once hailed as a generational talent at United during Sir Alex Ferguson's legendary reign at the club after breaking through into the first-team alongside the likes of Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard.

The 31-year-old initially rose through the ranks of the academy at United, making 11 appearances for the U21 side during which time he won the FA Youth Cup and starred as a future talent to watch.

He was later promoted to the senior team by Ferguson with his performances at youth level leading many to believe he could go on to forge a career as an Old Trafford legend.

However, Morrison only proceeded to make three appearances for United's first-team, facing Wolves, Crystal Palace, and Aldershot Town across two seasons before being sold to West Ham in a deal worth just under £1m in 2012.

He has since become a journeyman across European football with Morrison joining clubs across England, Italy, Sweden and the Netherlands as he sought to find a footballing home.

Morrison was most recently contracted to MLS side DC United but left at the start of the year in the wake of Wayne Rooney leaving his head coach role to pursue management opportunities in London.

Now, the Wythenshawe-born playmaker is back in England and attempting to find a new club by playing in the friendly against United's youth stars.

Morrison will be joined by a host of other players who have made their names across the Championship, League One and League Two with Hakeeb Adelakun and Kieron Freeman also featuring.
