Ex-Premier League star reveals 'it's costing me money' to keep playing

The 35-year-old has endured a meteoric drop from the heights of playing for Liverpool and Newcastle amongst other English top-flight sides, but is evidently keen to continue playing.

Liverpool once forked out £35m to the Magpies for Andy Carroll's signature in 2011 and he went on to make 58 appearances for the club before eventually departing for West Ham just over a year later.

Carroll later returned to Newcastle after the Hammers before dropping down the English football leagues and eventually making the move abroad to continue playing in France.

The striker spent a spell in the nation last season with Ligue 2 side Amiens, having left Reading at the end of August 2023 and is now playing for French fourth-tier club Bordeaux.

A former Premier League and England icon has revealed it is costing him money to keep his career going at 35-years-old

The team recruited Carroll as they attempt to navigate their way through a complex financial crisis that saw them forced to give up their professional status and were subsequently relegated to Championnat National 2.

Carroll has now revealed that he isn't playing for the huge financial rewards that come with the profession and recently admitted that it is costing him to play for the club.

'To be honest, it's even costing me money to come and play for Bordeaux but I'm playing football and I am simply happy to be playing football,' he told RMC Sport.

'I want to be a part of this club's history and to be frank, it wasn't a question of money. In my career, it's never been a question of money,' said Carroll.

The forward also previously made nine senior appearances for England and scoring two goals during Fabio Capello's managerial reign.
