FA board 'gives approval for foreign manager to be next England boss'

The new England boss could be a foreign manager, after it emerged that the FA board had 'given approval' to expand the search beyond just English names.

Gareth Southgate's departure came on the back of another European Championship final defeat, and the FA have pledged to take as long as necessary to find a successor with an interim option in place if required.

The recruitment process is believed to involve finding a manager through interviews with diverse coaches, with a number of candidates already identified.

Eddie Howe and Graham Potter appear to be the early favourites with under-21s boss Lee Carsley an option to take interim charge while football's governing body, led by Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott, ramp up the hunt.

And now it seems that the search is set to widen further with the board approving the move towards interviewing foreign candidates, The Guardian reports.

This could put Mauricio Pochettino, who left Chelsea over the summer, in contention

This boosts the chances of Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel taking the hot seat although their lofty wage demands could prove a sticking point in negotiations.

The likes of former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola have even been thrown into the conversation by speculating fans.

Bullingham and McDermott are expected to draw up a shortlist of contenders before interviewing the potential managers and going back to the board to ratify their selection.

Southgate took over in 2016, leading his side to two European Championship finals and a World Cup semi-final, but failed to deliver a first major trophy since 1966.

England are now ranked fourth in the FIFA rankings on the back of the tournament, behind Argentina, France and Spain, up one from fifth before the competition in Germany kicked off.

They are back to square one, however, in their bid to win a major title, with World Cup qualifying set to begin in March - with their group opponents set to be decided in a draw to take place in December.

England are understood to have an interim solution in place for September's international fixtures should a candidate not have been appointed permanently by then.

Last week, frontrunner Howe revealed he fully expects to start the season as Newcastle United head coach.

Newcastle are determined to hold on to their head coach, who took the club from the Premier League's relegation zone to the Champions League in the space of two seasons after succeeding Steve Bruce in the job in late 2021.

Howe added that he has not felt the need to address his players about the potentially unsettling speculation as they see his 'commitment' to the job every day.

'There's nothing to talk about,' said Howe. 'No need to address the players. They know by how I act and how I am on a daily basis how committed I am to the club.'
