Alejandro Garnacho caused a little bit of a stir on social media after he was seen sporting an Al-Ittihad jersey, the rival of his idol Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Manchester United winger is currently enjoying his summer break after helping Argentina claim their third major trophy in the last four years at the Copa America.
The 20-year-old made only one appearance but his time spent on international duty has seen him miss out on the Red Devils' pre-season tour of the United States. Garnacho is joined on his break by his club team-mate Facundo Pellistri.
And the pair sent some fans into a frenzy with a post following an intense training session.
Garnacho took to Instagram to share an image of himself, in an Al-Ittihad strip, and the Uruguayan along with the caption: 'Work done"'
The Jeddah-based outfit have the likes of Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante and Fabinho in their ranks. But their cast of former global stars were not enough to see them defend the Saudi Pro League crown clinched in 2023.
In fact, the side finished 42 points behind the runaways winners Al-Hilal, who were 14 points clear of Ronaldo's Al-Nassr. Garnacho has made his adoration for the Portuguese known over the years.
In his youth team days, the winger would often copy Ronaldo's celebration when he found the back of the net. As a result, some fans on social media to see the youngster apparently switch allegiances.
'I thought [Garnacho's] Saudi team was Al Nassr,' wrote one user on X. Another said: 'Garnacho wearing an Al-Ittihad shirt is strange tbh.'
'His idol plays for Al Nassr, why's he wearing Al-Ittihad jersey?' Questioned a third fan. A fourth simply said: 'Why not Al-Nassr?'
Garnacho got the chance to play alongside his hero during his second spell back at the club in 2021. Three years on, he has established himself as a crucial part of Erik ten Hag's side.
