Ariel Henry resigns as prime minister of Haiti
On Thursday, Ariel Henry resigned as Haiti's prime minister, paving the way for a new government to be formed.
Henry submitted his resignation letter on April 24, which was released on the same day as a council tasked with selecting a new prime minister and Cabinet was sworn in.
The remaining Cabinet appointed Economy and Finance Minister Michel Patrick Boisvert as the interim prime minister.
"Today is an important day in the life of our dear republic," Boisvert stated, emphasizing the severity of Haiti's crisis.
The council, created following an emergency meeting, is responsible for setting the agenda of the new Cabinet, appointing an electoral commission, and establishing a national security council.
"The crisis is unsustainable," said Smith Augustin, a voting member of the council.
Regine Abraham, a nonvoting member, highlighted the devastating impact of gang violence, which has displaced tens of thousands of Haitians and closed over 900 schools in Port-au-Prince.
"The population of Port-au-Prince has literally been taken hostage," Abraham stated.
The international community has urged the council to address Haiti's widespread insecurity. Gangs currently control a significant portion of Port-au-Prince, and the number of killings has increased by over 50% compa
