Karen Carney slams Bruno Fernandes for lacking 'control'

Karen Carney has slammed Bruno Fernandes for lacking 'control' and 'showing frustration' after the Manchester United captain was sent off again in the Red Devils' chaotic Europa League draw with Porto.

The Portuguese followed up his dismissal against Tottenham on Sunday, which has since been rescinded, with another tonight as his side rescued a 3-3 draw thanks to a late strike from Harry Maguire.

This time Fernandes earned two yellow cards, the second coming when he raised his boot high to try to get on the end of a cross in the six-yard box with United 3-2 down.

And pundit Carney has taken a dim view of the midfielder's decision-making and insisted that he can have no complaints over the sending off.

'There's no question for me on this one. When he hangs his foot up so high, I don't know why he hasn't gone with his head, but that is a yellow card as well. So there's no complaints.

'Ok, he had an overturn the other day but that's two back to back red cards now for the Manchester United captain. That's the control element that you need and it wasn't there tonight.

'It is frustration. I'm frustrated every time I watch them. I couldn't imagine playing in it. If the captain can't have control that may be a way of showing his frustration. You can't ignore it. It's frustration.'

Long before the bedlam of the second half, United had actually lead their Portuguese opposition after Marcus Rashford produced a driving run and finish and Rasmus Hojlund struck on his return to the side.

Things then turned pear-shaped for Ten Hag's side as Brazilian winger Pepe headed home a rebound after Noussair Mazraoui almost put a cross into his own goal.

There was a sense of inevitability about the ensuing collapse and a Samu Omorodion double put the Dutch manager on the brink of a new low and being one result closer to a sacking.

The Spanish striker nodded home a delicious Joao Mario cross before rifling home a near-post finish to give his side the lead.

But it was outcast Maguire to the rescue with a signature header, aimed down into the floor, as United pulled off a European escape act to save Ten Hag's skin.

The Red Devils will be without Fernandes for their next Europa League match after he received another red after being sent off just before half-time against Spurs for lashing out at Spurs star James Maddison following a frustrating first 45 minutes.

The incident, which happened while the away side were leading 1-0, all but settled the result on Sunday afternoon with Ange Postecoglou's outfit later adding two second-half goals.

After the match, Fernandes and his under-pressure manager Erik Ten Hag both slammed the decision with the Portuguese saying that the tackle was 'a clear foul but never a red card'.

In the aftermath of what proved to be the key incident of the encounter, Fernandes could be seen chatting with Maddison on the pitch. Following the match, the United man revealed what was discussed.

He said: 'I just wanted to come and talk and be myself because my team-mates deserve that for what they have done in the game playing with one man less – particularly as I was the man sent off, the one that let them down.

'No one likes to be sent off. It's not a good feeling. We end up conceding another two goals.

Fernandes's red follows his sending off against Spurs on Sunday which was later reversed

'I don't go in with the studs, it's a clear foul but never a red card. Maddison said it is a foul but it's not a red card. If this is a red card we have to look at other incidents. I think it's never a red card. It's a foul if he wants to give a yellow. I don't understand why VAR doesn't call the referee to the screen.'

Ten Hag added: 'The red card changes the game. I don't think it was a red card.'

The decision was later reversed by the Premier League, sparing Fernandes a three-match ban.
