An orca whale calf trapped in a lagoon on the northwestern side of Vancouver Island has since found its way to the lagoon’s outlet.
The young whale was enticed to the lagoon outlet by members of Nuchatlaht First Nation and Ehattesaht First Nation using a small inflatable vessel and sea lion meat.
The calf was found on Friday, April 26, during high tide, when it left the lagoon. As of 7:18 a.m. PST Friday, the calf was found in Espinosa Inlet, moving towards Esperanza Inlet proper. The team is now working to encourage the calf towards open ocean water.
