Liverpool sign Federico Chiesa from Juventus in bargain £12.5m deal

Liverpool have completed the signing of Federico Chiesa on a four-year deal from Juventus for a fee of £10million.

The Italian winger was one of the poster boys of Italian football when he joined Juventus from Fiorentina – and he starred as the nation won the European Championship in 2021 – but a serious injury halted his progress.

Liverpool believe they have pulled off a bargain by signing a proven player and Chiesa adds further depth to the forward line.

The Reds also think new head coach Arne Slot and his backroom staff – including head of performance Ruben Peeters – are specialists in injury prevention and they can get over Chiesa's fitness worries since his ACL blow in January 2022.

Liverpool have signed Federico Chiesa from Juventus for £10m, possibly rising to £12.5m

Chiesa has watched Liverpool play under Slot and Mail Sport believes he turned down more lucrative offers from elsewhere to join Liverpool.

He was frozen out of Juventus by manager Thiago Motta and was available for a cheap price this summer.

The deal is a basic £10m fee which could rise to £12.5m based on add-ons which relate to Liverpool winning the Premier League or Champions League.

Chiesa told Liverpoolfc.com: 'I'm so happy to be a Liverpool player. When [sporting director] Richard Hughes called me and he said, "Do you want to join Liverpool?" – and the coach called me – I said yes immediately because I know the history of this club, I know what it represents to the fans.

Chiesa is Liverpool's second signing this week. The Reds announced a deal to sign goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia on Tuesday, before sending him back on loan.

Chiesa's move to Anfield comes after he spent four seasons in Turin, during which he scored 32 goals in 131 games for Juve.

The 26-year-old - who is the son of former football star Enrico Chiesa - has also netted seven times in 51 appearances for Italy.
