Liverpool's youngest-ever goalscorer joins League Two club

Former Liverpool midfielder Ben Woodburn, the youngest goalscorer in the club's history, has joined League Two club Salford.

Woodburn scored on his second Reds appearance against Leeds aged 17 years and 45 days in 2016 but left Anfield in 2022.

The young midfielder broke Michael Owen's record, which had stood since 1997, to become Liverpool's youngest goalscorer.

However, he was unable to earn consistent first-team football and went out on four loans before being let go.

Now 24, he has spent the last two seasons with Preston but fell into a bit-part role in the 2023-24 campaign and was released this summer.

Woodburn scored in his second game for the Reds against Liverpool in the FA Cup in 2016, becoming their youngest-ever scorer

Salford manager Karl Robinson had the Wales international on loan at Oxford and believes he can help the 24-year-old fulfil the potential shown as a teenager.

Woodburn has managed 11 caps for his country though the last of those came in 2021.

It has been a busy summer for Salford, who have already added to their ranks the likes of James Chester - a former Manchester United and Premier league star - and Cole Stockton.

They are looking to get out of League Two at the sixth time of asking but progress stalled last season with a 20th-place finish.

The Ammies, co-owned by Gary Neville and other members of Manchester United's famed Class of 92, appointed Robinson in January.

Robinson has a promotion on his CV from his time at MK Dons, where he secured a second-placed finish in League One in 2014-15.

However, despite making the play-offs twice in a five-year stint with Oxford United, he was unable to help the club gain promotion to the Championship.
