MAN UNITED CONFIDENTIAL: Club chiefs meet to discuss MORE signings

Since deciding to give their backing to Erik ten Hag in Ibiza over the summer, Ineos chiefs have backed the Dutchman in the transfer market - and they are not planning to be done just yet.

With an official announcement on the double deal of Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui imminent, Confidential understands that a meeting was held on Monday with United's top brass to discuss strategy for the remainder of the window.

A midfielder is a priority focus between now and 11pm on August 30 when the window closes, with Paris Saint-Germain's Manuel Ugarte still the top target.

PSG are open to moving on from the Uruguayan but their £52million asking price remains a stumbling block United are keen to bring down. An approach has been made for AS Monaco's Youssouf Fofana, but no official bid has been lodged yet as they monitor Ugarte's availability.

Burnley's Sander Berge continues to be of interest, albeit viewed internally as more of a Plan B option to Ugarte, while Barcelona's Frankie de Jong has long term admirers at Old Trafford, not least Ten Hag. Nottingham Forest's Danilo has been another name thrown into the mix in recent weeks.

Everton centre back Jarrad Branthwaite remains a key target despite two centre backs already joining, while Brighton forward Evan Ferguson is well liked at United as they seek attacking reinforcements, but that move seems unlikely in this window due to the funds involved.

On Branthwaite, that is a move that is set to run and run with Everton holding out for £70m, while United have no plans to go above £60m. Sources have indicated that that one could go to the wire.

The issue United have is that after spending more than £150m on Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, De Ligt and Mazraoui, they are now actively in sell-mode to make any further additions.

Fulham have already seen a £20m bid knocked back for Scott McTominay, who is also generating interest from Napoli in Serie A.

United have not yet been met with firm offers for centre back Victor Lindelof, who has fallen down the pecking order.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka today sealed his move to West Ham, joining on a seven-year deal, to clear the way for Mazraoui, while Casemiro remains a player United are open to moving on from, particularly given his £340,000 a week wages.

Garnacho heads back early

It has been a hectic summer for many of United's first team squad with Euro 2024 and Copa America commitments, but that did not stop Alejandro Garnacho from wanting to hit the ground running.

Confidential understands that the Argentine winger requested to cut short his time off after winning Copa America and return to Carrington early in a bid to be ready for the Community Shield at Wembley.

The 20-year-old's request was gratefully accepted and staff have been impressed with the wide-man since he returned to Carrington.

While he started the Community Shield on the bench, he made a game-changing impact when coming on in the 59th minute, going on to put United ahead in the 82nd minute before Erik ten Hag's side eventually lost on penalties.

Garnacho is expected to be restored to the starting XI for the Premier League opener against Fulham on Friday night.

Fans worried about ticket chaos

United fans are fearing ticket chaos at their opening Premier League game of the season against Fulham on Friday night.

The match will be the first held at Old Trafford since the club controversially brought in a new system, where tickets are stored in the official mobile app rather than a supporter's digital wallet.

Tickets will be 'live' QR codes, which will be made available three hours before kick-off. They are also restricted to one device as part of United's attempts to clamp down on touting.

United allowed fans to use the new system for the Community Shield clash with Man City at Wembley but several reported they were unable to access their tickets after receiving a message that their device was not authorised - despite it being the one they have registered with the club.

It has sparked concerns that there could be long queues at the turnstiles on Friday night.

'It is going to be shambolic,' one fan wrote on X.

Confidential understands that an internal briefing was sent round to staff on Monday calling on volunteers for the evening to help ease ticketing concerns of supporters, adding to Here to Help and regular matchday staff.

Megastore struggling to keep doors open

While volunteers are being sought to help around Old Trafford with potential ticketing disruption, Confidential understands that there are also staffing concerns in United's megastore for Friday night.

A number of under-18 workers who previously worked in the store have departed and a source has told Confidential that there are concerns about having enough staff to fill the rota for the opening matchday of the season.

It is a hectic week at Old Trafford's megastore following the release of the 2024-25 third shirt and operating as normal on the first match of the season is of big importance.

United declined to comment on concerns around staffing when approached by Confidential.

Appleton returns as loan manager

Michael Appleton is returning to Manchester United to assume the role of loans manager.

Confidential understands that Appleton, who was on United's books as a kid, is ready to become the latest off-field hire as part of a wider reshuffle by Ineos.

Dan Ashworth, who made the move to Manchester United this summer to be their sporting director, has a close relationship with Appleton from the pair's time together at West Brom.

Former Tranmere physio Les Parry is the current loans manager but Appleton has been earmarked to replace him.

Loan moves for players are paramount to development and last year United saw a number of players suffer setbacks when away from the club, not least Dan Gore getting injured after one game with Port Vale and Maxi Oyedele being frozen out at Forest Green Rovers following the sacking of Troy Deeney.

Once Appleton takes on the job he will be tasked with monitoring the progress of rising stars such as striker Joe Hugill, who has joined Wigan Athletic on loan, and goalkeeper Radek Vitek, who is set for another spell away after impressing at Accrington Stanley last season.

'Kid Messi' continues to turn heads in academy

Back in April, Confidential detailed how United staff were eager to show rising 13-year-old star JJ Gabriel the bright future ahead of him when he got to warm-up with the Under-18s ahead of their Premier League Cup final versus Manchester City.

Gabriel, who has been blessed with the 'Kid Messi' nickname on social media, continues to dazzle for United multiple age groups up, this time playing for United's U16s on a tour of Hong Kong.

Over the weekend Gabriel, 13, was awarded Most Valuable Player (MVP) after scoring two goals and adding an assist in United's two matches.

Gabriel, who has been earmarked as a future superstar and has been signed to sportswear giant Nike since the age of 10, was handed his MVP trophy by former United striker Dimitar Berbatov.

While Confidential understands there is still some way to go in his development before he is playing even higher with the U18s, the teen is one to watch in a group that also includes Kai Rooney, son of United's all-time top scorer Wayne Rooney, and Silva Mexes, son of former Wales striker Robert Earnshaw.

Robson heading for Wrexham

Bryan Robson is heading to Wrexham - but it's not to be the latest big name to hang out with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The United great is hosting 'An Evening With Bryan Robson' at the Maesgwyn Hall with all proceeds going to support the Unbeatable Eva foundation.

The charity was set up after Eva Williams passed away at the age of 10 following a battle with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a rare and terminal former of childhood cancer.

Robson is heading to Wrexham on September 14, 2024, to help raise funds with an auction of memorabilia items planned following his after dinner speech.

Tickets are priced at £35pp and more details can be found HERE.

United, meanwhile, should be wary of Alex Iwobi - who is looking to score at Old Trafford for the third season in a row - on Friday

All eyes on Alex

United should be wary of Alex Iwobi when they kick off the new campaign against Fulham at Old Trafford on Friday night - he's in a very select group aiming to score against them for a third league season in a row.

Iwobi is in an impressive list of five alongside Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, Mo Salah and Mathias Jensen joining Iwobi but unlike the others his goals have come with different clubs; scoring for Everton v United in 2022/23 and with Fulham last season.

The Nigerian international has been in excellent pre-season form as well with goals against Benfica and Watford, and two assists in their last warm-up game v Hoffenheim earning him man-of-the-match.

Considering how United began last season they will be anxious, even if home to Fulham doesn't look one of the toughest opening fixtures they could have got.
