Man United injury crisis set to hand teenager Harry Amass a chance

No doubt Erik ten Hag will not have missed this, sitting in a press conference suite overlooking Carrington's training pitches talking about another injury crisis.

Last season there were more than 60 separate cases of injury and after training on Thursday, Ten Hag revealed that four defenders - Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw - have question marks over their fitness ahead of Saturday's Community Shield.

Summer signing Leny Yoro, who arrived from Lille in a £59million deal, is out for three months following surgery on a foot problem, while left back Tyrell Malacia, who missed the entire 2023-24 campaign, continues to be a non-factor.

It means 17-year-old Harry Amass, who broke out as a star across the tour of the US this summer, may be pushed into his toughest test yet should he get the nod at Wembley against Manchester City on Saturday.

Even if Shaw, who hasn't featured for United since going off after 45 minutes against Luton Town in February, manages to get through the final training session today before the Community Shield 24 hours later, it is seen as improbable that the left back will be risked after such a problematic year with injury.

'Harry Maguire missed the game (against Liverpool) as a precaution but he is still a question mark for Saturday,' Ten Hag detailed.

'We have training and we have to see whether he is fit enough or not to be available.'

He continued: 'Victor Lindelof played (against Liverpool) but also he's a question mark and also Azza and Luke Shaw are both question marks. We have to assess them tomorrow.'

It means that Lisandro Martinez, who only returned to Carrington this week following a break after Argentina's Copa America win, may need to be rushed back to action with United having only three fit senior defenders.

Jonny Evans, who went off ill in the pre-season defeat to Liverpool but has since trained, and Diogo Dalot are the other two Ten Hag can call upon.

Maguire was a key figure amid the injury crisis last season and would be a huge miss if he can play no part.

He has been dealing with a calf issue that cost him a place in England's Euro 2024 squad and saw him play limited minutes on United's pre-season tour, managing a half of action against both Real Betis and Arsenal.

With his leadership at risk of being missing on the pitch, it makes the need to use Amass even more fascinating.

The 17-year-old has won rave reviews around Carrington with Ten Hag and the coaching staff and is viewed as the most likely youngster to next make the grade with the first team.

But having never played in the Premier League, and Ten Hag himself admitting at the start of the month that he thinks it is too soon to depend on the teenager, it would be the biggest game of his career versus a loaded Man City side.

'If we train him well, if we coach him well, then, in three months, it's possible that he can be on that point,' Ten Hag said of Amass this summer.

'But, in this moment, he needs to catch up and he has to develop some skills already to play for Manchester United, competing for the highest positions in the league.

'But, with big talent, it can go up very quickly and that is very interesting to see if he is capable of doing this.'

With injuries already piling up at the back and the pool of players to choose from drying up, Amass may not have three months to find his feet.
