Metomic unveils AI-powered data classification solution for Google Workspaces

Data security solution startup Metomic Ltd. today announced a new solution that makes it possible to discover, classify and secure sensitive data at large scale across Google Workspaces.

The new Data Classification solution uses artificial intelligence to automate complex data management Workflows to allow information technology and security teams to maintain control of their data. The service also ensures data compliance across cloud-based storage and software-as-service environments.

Metomic argues that without accurate data classification, businesses can’t prioritize risk, address vulnerabilities or implement effective security measures at scale downstream. With the company’s Data Classification solution, organizations can automate complex data workflows and implement “data rules” that ensure files are labeled appropriately within Google.

The new service also delivers the ability to create effective security controls that keep a business’ most sensitive data safe from becoming a data security risk, such as revoking public access to files marked confidential.

Advanced classifying and tagging functionality as part of the service benefits highly regulated industries — particularly healthcare and financial organizations — by making it easy to adhere to a wide range of strict regulations such as the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation, the California Consumer Privacy Act, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. The result is a reduction of the risk of costly penalties associated with noncompliance.

Under the hood, the service leverages Metomic’s data loss prevention technology to allow users to add, remove and modify context-aware data labels easily across an entire data environment, ensuring data management classification protocols remain accurate and updated.

“Understanding what sensitive data your employees are creating, where it’s stored and how it’s being accessed and shared is critical, especially in today’s cloud-based work environments, like Google Drive,” said co-founder and Chief Executive Rich Vibert. “Metomic’s data classification solution empowers IT and security teams to have complete control over their data management capabilities, automating key priorities and enabling a much more secure framework that minimizes data security risks while vastly improving a company’s data management capabilities.”

Metomic is a venture capital-backed startup that has raised $25.7 million in funding over four rounds, including $20 million in February 2023. Investors in the company include Evolution Equity Partners, Resonance Ltd. and Connect Ventures Management LLP.
