Microsoft clarifies Windows 11 version 24H2 won't release in October

In a nutshell: A recent forum post from Microsoft led many in the tech media to believe that Windows 11 version 24H2 could be rolled out early next month for all users, but Redmond has since clarified that it has no such plans. However, the company did not reveal a release date for the anxiously awaited update.

Confusion arose earlier this week when a Microsoft representative published an official forum post announcing that the next "annual Windows 11 feature update release" will roll out for all users, along with the monthly security update release on October 8. The post also suggested that early birds could install the update as early as September 24 by changing the Windows Update setting on their PC.

Ghacks initially reported the news, taking the post as a de facto official announcement for the universal rollout of version 24H2. The story picked up steam over the next few days, and many tech blogs and news outlets reported that the next big Windows 11 update is just around the corner.

However, Microsoft clarified on Wednesday that it will only roll out its "regular monthly servicing updates" on October 8, not Windows 11 24H2. The company did not reveal when it plans to release 24H2. So, users who got their hopes up will have to wait several more weeks to get the latest features on their machines.

It is worth noting that Windows 11 24H2 officially debuted earlier this year with the launch of the latest Surface Laptop and Surface Pro. With Microsoft and other tech companies increasingly focusing on AI, the new version contains several AI-powered features, including the controversial Windows Recall that Microsoft ironically recalled following serious concerns over privacy and security.

Another notable AI feature in Windows 11 24H2 is the inclusion of the Copilot app, which has also stirred up controversy. Disgruntled users claim the Copilot app is only a website wrapper and not a native application. In other words, it isn't fully integrated into Windows 11 and doesn't offer the same experience as a native Windows program.

In any case, Windows 11 24H2 is still an exciting upgrade with many new features. However, when it finally rolls out remains a mystery. Unless you are a Windows Insider or are using the latest Surface devices, you'll have to hurry up and wait.
