CONMEBOL subsequently handed Nunez a five-match ban from international football, the longest given to any of the players involved.

However, the Uruguayan football federation has successfully appealed the verdict through the Court of Arbitration for Sport and Nunez is now free to feature in Uruguay's upcoming clashes with Peru and Ecuador later this month.

The authorisation is provisional while the disciplinary process is analysed by the court and Nunez could still be forced to miss upcoming games.

Nunez is currently the top scorer in CONMEBOL qualifying for the 2026 World Cup having netted five times in six appearances for La Celeste.

The upcoming tournament marks features an expanded format, increasing to 48 teams for the first time in the competition's history.

As a result, six of the ten teams competing in the CONMEBOL qualifiers will advance to the finals in Canada, the United States and Mexico in 2026.

The seventh-placed finisher will enter an inter-confederation play-off to earn a place in the finals.

Uruguay currently sit third in their group, having suffered just one defeat.
