Permiso launches Universal Identity Graph to enhance enterprise identity threat detection

Identity threat detection and response startup Permiso Security Inc. today announced the launch of its Universal Identity Graph, a new service that provides risk and threat visibility for all identities in all environments.

The Universal Identity Graph combines identity security posture management with identity threat detection and response to provide a comprehensive identity security solution. With the service, identities can be tracked wherever they go to detect threats in an enterprise environment.

Permiso argues that existing security posture management and threat detection solutions alert based on atomic events. Those are specific actions performed in an environment that could potentially be suspicious or malicious, such as resetting multi-function authentication, logging in from a different geographic location, or database snapshotting. As each of these events often generates alerts in a given environment, security teams become swamped with alerts that have no context of the activity that is actually taking place.

The new Universal Identity Graph differs by following all human — workforce, guest and vendor — and nonhuman identities such as access keys, secrets and services accounts wherever they go, Then they tie the activity back to the identity that performed them, even when shared credentials are being used. By monitoring access patterns and behavioral anomalies as identities move across authentication boundaries, Permiso is able to track identities wherever they go and quickly detect actual identity-based threats in a given enterprise environment.

“Many times, organizations adopt one solution that focuses on identity posture to mitigate risk and yet another solution that focuses on threat detection at runtime,” said co-founder and co-Chief Executive Jason Martin. “While organizations benefit from securing these layers separately, it creates a massive blind spot across the authentication boundaries in an environment. Permiso’s Universal Identity Graph helps organizations secure all of their human and nonhuman identities across those environments in one centralized location.”

Permiso is a venture capital-backed startup that has raised about $39.1 million, including a round of $18.5 million in April. Investors in the company include Altimeter Capital Management LP and Point72 Ventures.
