Roma sack Daniele De Rossi just four games into the new Serie A season

Roma have sacked club legend Daniele De Rossi as manager just four matches into the new Serie A season.

The club have endured a difficult start to the new season with Roma sitting 16th in the league standings having drawn three matches and lost once.

De Rossi was previously appointed as Jose Mourinho's successor in January after the legendary Portuguese boss had his contract terminated following two-and-a-half years in charge.

Roma were initially astounded by De Rossi's start to life in the dugout and offered him the job on a permanent basis after guiding the club to a sixth-place league finish and the Europa League semi-finals.

However, the Italian capital club are still searching for a first victory of the season and have now taken the shock decision to sack De Rossi just three months after he signed a contract.

Announcing the decision to sack the Italian, Roma stated: 'The club's decision is made in the best interests of the team, to get back on the desired path as soon as possible at a time when the season is still in its early stages.

'A heartfelt thank you to Daniele, who will always be at home at the Giallorossi club, for the work he has done in recent months with passion and dedication.

'Communication regarding the team's technical guidance will follow,' the statement concluded.

Sunday's 1-1 draw with Genoa would eventually prove to be De Rossi's last match in charge and was completed with the Italian being sent to the stands for dissent.

However, the 41-year-old will never get a chance to serve his punishment after being dismissed by Roma with an average points-per-match ration of 1.7 after overseeing 30 games.

De Rossi's departure sees Roma owner Dan Friedkin continue his hire-and-fire approach with the latest change marking a third manager to be sacked under his ownership.

Former AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has previously been linked with joining the club but looks set to leave Italian football and become the next Al-Nassr boss in Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, De Rossi is expected to take an initial break from management after being sacked by the club that he made over 600 appearances for.
