Six Premier League stars among players rushed to safety from fans

Six Premier League stars were among players rushed to safety as Ghana fans invaded the pitch and threw missiles.

The Black Stars have been in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying action over the international break, and lost 1-0 against Angola on Thursday evening to suffer their first defeat of qualification.

It was a stoppage time goal from Felicio Milson that caused the riot at the Baba Yara Stadium, with fans storming onto the pitch and, according to The Sun, hurling missiles in the form of bottles and other objects onto the turf.

Advertising boards were also said to have been smashed during the scenes, with soldiers and police dogs among officials who took to the field to help squash what was happening.

And six top flight players were among those who were ushered to safety by officials, including captain and Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey.

West Ham's Mohammed Kudus also started the game, as did Brighton's Tariq Lamptey, Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo and Leicester pair Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu.

Reports suggest that one man was also arrested after invading the pitch during the game and confronting Ayew.

On Friday, Ghana's National Sports Authority closed the Babe Yara Stadium for a month to be repaired, with the Ghana FA expecting a hefty fine.

They have previously been punished for similar incidents, receiving a fine in January for a pitch invasion and another for the the same reason in 2019.

One report told The Sun: 'The crowd kicked anything in sight, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.'

According to GhanaWebTV, fans also broke into the ground after there were ticketing issues getting in before the match.
