Reviews ethics statementWhy You Can Trust CNET Money
CNET Money’s mission is to help you maximize your financial potential. Our recommendations are based on our editors’ independent research and analysis, and we continuously update our content to reflect current partner offers. How we rate credit cards
Remember to pay your statement balance in full every month to avoid costly interest charges that’ll cut into your rewards. And consider pairing your new no-annual-fee card with other credit cards for travel or a rewards credit card with a different rewards program.
Consider your spending habits and focus on what you need from a credit card. Are you looking for an inexpensive way to earn rewards, or are you looking for a way to pay down high-interest debt? Do you spend more in one category, or are you looking to earn flat rewards? Before opening a new credit card, focus on your financial needs and try to find a card that makes spending more rewarding and not more expensive.
After reviewing hundreds of cards as a credit card editor, I know that you don’t need to pay an annual fee to get a great credit card.
Take the Wells Fargo Active Cash Card, for example. It’s the card I use for all of my uncategorized spending -- so anything outside of gas, groceries, dining and travel. There’s a reason it’s our best credit card. It’s inexpensive, rewarding and easy to use.
An annual fee doesn’t always mean the card offers enough value to make it a good fit for you. There are plenty of inexpensive cards to choose from, here are the best.

If you prefer staying at Hilton properties while traveling, the Hilton Honors American Express Card could provide a way to turn rewards into hotel stays. However, if you wanted a card for cash-back or statement credits, this won’t be a good pick. Hilton points also might not be worth too much, limiting how rewarding this card can be. But it does offer a number of added amenities for Hilton customers.

The Discover it® Cash Back* is another good card that costs nothing but a good credit score to open.
It offers decent rewards and an introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers, but what makes this card really stand out is the Unlimited Cashback Match™ welcome bonus.
For your first year as a cardholder, all of your cash back earned is essentially doubled by Discover, with no limitations. You can rack up a lot more cash back with this credit card sign up bonus than with most credit cards, but you’ll have to be patient to earn it, as Discover won’t match your cash back until after your full first year as a cardholder is up.
For the quarterly rotating bonus category, you’ll earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined spending for the quarter, then 1%. You have to activate these rewards through your account each quarter to earn them, though. Now through September 2024, you can earn these rewards at Walmart and grocery stores.

Some issuers charge a recurring annual fee for using a particular credit card. Annual fees can range from $50 for a basic rewards card to over $600 for premium cards with luxury perks. Credit cards with steep annual fees generally offer lucrative rewards and perks, including travel credits, airport lounge access, travel protections and better redemption options. However, many no-annual-fee credit cards still offer rewards and perks but drop the yearly price tag.
Avoid paying a yearly fee
Credit cards that don’t charge an annual fee pair well with ones that do
An inexpensive way to earn rewards for your frequent purchases
Credit cards could lead to overspending
Credit card debt is easy to get into, but difficult to get out of
Cards that charge an annual fee could provide benefits that outweigh the cost
Before you apply for a credit card, consider what you want out of your card. Start by comparing your goals to card features: A rewards credit card can help you get steep discounts on travel while a cash-back card can put some money back in your pocket for general spending.
You’ll want to choose a credit card that rewards you for how you spend already -- you don’t want to alter your spending habits to fit a credit card. You can start with the basics, like credit cards for groceries or gas.
For travelers, if you have a specific trip in mind, research which airlines fly to that destination and check to see which type of points you can use to fly that airline. From there, you can pick a credit card that will help you earn those types of points.
Finding a no-annual-fee credit card with a welcome bonus is a great way to earn a higher return on your spending -- though not every card will have one. You’ll want to be sure you can unlock the bonus without spending on unnecessary purchases, otherwise you should exclude it from your evaluation.
A great way to do this is by applying for a new card right before a large planned purchase -- like an elective medical procedure, tuition payment, or kitchen remodel. That way, you can easily meet a welcome offer for money you were already planning to spend.
It comes down to your spending habits and appetite for perks. While rewards credit cards without an annual fee offer a guaranteed return on your spending as long as you use the card responsibly, you may be able to get more rewards elsewhere.
However, earning higher rewards and taking advantage of specialty travel perks (like TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credits) is only one piece of the puzzle. If you don’t use these benefits enough to justify the annual fee, you may dig a bigger hole than the one you started with.
Your credit card shouldn’t feel like a chore, so if a portfolio of perks isn’t quite what you’re looking for, a no-annual-fee or lower annual fee credit card can still get the job done.
Annual fees usually equate to better card perks and higher rewards, but that doesn’t mean you need to pay one to get a good credit card. “Not all good travel rewards credit cards have an annual fee,” credit expert Julia Menez said. “For example, The Blue Business®️ Plus Credit Card from American Express has no annual fee but lets you earn 2x on purchases, up to $50,000 of expenses each year (then 1x).”
Menez added that it’s important to make sure an annual fee fits into your budget. “It’s better to opt for a credit card with no annual fee if you’re not able to justify the investment of an annual fee after comparing it against the value of the benefits you’ll be able to use from the card.”
But why would someone consider paying them when there are plenty of viable no-annual-fee options?
“With annual fees, you’re typically paying for a higher level of perks and benefits,” credit expert Gerri Detweiler said. “So it may be a higher level of points that you earn on purchases, or it might be additional benefits like free checked bags or status with a rewards program.”
Detweiler said to determine if an annual fee is worth paying, try to apply a dollar amount to the card’s benefits. “Start by looking at what specific benefits are offered, and the dollar cost associated with those. For example, if you have a family of four and you’re going to fly across the country at Christmas, the savings from free checked bags could cover the cost of the card’s annual fee.”
But if you aren’t sure you can justify the cost, Detweiler said, most credit cards offer a no-annual-fee alternative. If you opt for a card with an annual fee that ends up not being worth it, you can contact your credit card issuer to inquire about downgrading to a version without a fee.
If you use your no-annual-fee credit card responsibly, you can reap the benefits without stressing over a high annual price tag. Here are a few tips to consider when using your card:
Follow these steps to apply for a credit card without an annual fee:
Paying an annual fee isn’t always worth it, especially if you’re looking for a straightforward credit card that swaps top-tier benefits for a smaller annual price tag. However, you don’t have to pay an annual fee to get value from your credit card. If you find a no-annual-fee credit card with a rewards structure that pairs nicely with your spending habits, and you manage to keep up with your monthly bill, you can get more long-term value than you might think.
They can, but that doesn’t mean they will. It depends on your relationship with your card issuer and the standing of your account. You could contact your credit card issuer and see if they’ll waive an annual fee, but there’s no guarantee.
Many rewards credit cards and travel credit cards have annual fees around $100. These are usually associated with better rewards rates and perks. Some credit cards, like premium travel credit cards, can cost hundreds of dollars or even more. These credit cards often offer a lot of annual statement credits or other niche benefits.
Yes. In fact, most balance transfer credit cards offer no annual fee. You’ll want to keep an eye out for balance transfer fees, though. Most cards charge a 3% balance transfer fee, but some charge as much as 5%. Otherwise, you can find a handful of credit cards with no balance transfer fee.
