Iodyne primarily designs its hardware for video production professionals, so it isn't surprising that its upcoming Pro Mini "smart drive" includes a dizzying array of features for a price well outside the reach of most consumers. However, users seeking a portable SSD with absolutely no compromises should check out this unique device.
Pre-orders are now open for Iodyne's Pro Mini portable SSD, shipping in the first quarter of 2025. The ultra-high-end drive includes an astounding combination of functions that users probably won't find anywhere else. The Verge notes that the upcoming 4 TB and 8 TB variants will retail for $1,500 and $2,200, respectively. For comparison, Samsung's 8 TB T5 Evo is $549. However, the Pro Mini has functionality you won't find on standard SSDs.
One contributing factor to the Pro Mini's price is Iodyne's commitment to sustaining high speeds and ensuring that its device will rarely, if ever, throttle from overheating. While most portable SSDs still rely on USB 3.2, the Pro Mini supports USB 4 and Thunderbolt, achieving up to 40 GB/s, and maintains that speed with dual AirJet solid-state cooling modules.
One of the Pro Mini's most striking features is its e-ink screen. Iodyne added it to eliminate the need for physical adhesive labels. The 2.1-inch display can show names, QR codes, bar codes, camera numbers, logos, contact information, and more. Furthermore, the labels remain visible even if the drive is turned off for years.
Security is another primary selling point. The Pro Mini supports passkeys and NFC transponders. This functionality allows users to unlock it with PINs, biometrics, or other authentication methods on connected devices like smartphones. The drive uses enterprise-grade XTS-AES-256 encryption and RAID-6 data protection.
A rechargeable internal battery makes the SSD trackable using the native Find My apps on iOS and Android phones. The locating feature can also make the device emit a sound or flash an LED light when nearby.
The Mini Pro also has a few helpful data management features that make it stand out. For example, the portable SSD can split its capacity into multiple sectors with differing file system types – a feature ported from Iodyne's flagship Pro Data SSD. Furthermore, the company's Fleet Management service and proprietary mobile app enable users to remotely manage content from other Pro Mini and Pro Data devices.
