Trippier retires from England duty hours before Carsley names squad

Kieran Trippier has retired from international football following a distinguished England career.

The Newcastle right back has taken the decision to call time on his England tenure after helping the national side to the Euro 2024 final earlier this summer.

In a statement on Instagram, Trippier wrote: 'I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country let alone achieve 54 caps.

'It’s been one of the biggest honours of my life to represent my country at 4 major tournaments.

'I want to say a big thank you to Gareth and all the staff that have worked with the England squad for the trust they have placed in me throughout the years.

'Thank you to all my team mates - we have had some very special moments reaching 2 Euro finals, and a World Cup semi final and I am sure in the future this group of players will win a major tournament.

'I want to wish Lee, the coaching staff and the team all the best for the future .

'And finally a big thank you to all the England fans for your incredible support travelling all over the world to support us and keeping us going in the difficult moments.'

The 33-year-old earned 54 England caps, playing a key role during Gareth Southgate’s successful reign as head coach.

Trippier famously scored in the World Cup 2018 semi-final loss to Croatia, curling home a brilliant free-kick to fire England ahead.

Southgate described Trippier as his ‘warrior’ during his reign in charge. But Trippier has now taken the decision to walk away from the Three Lions ahead of interim boss Lee Carsley naming his squad later this afternoon.

Trippier's retirement leaves Carsley with a huge dilemma at left back, with first-choice option Luke Shaw currently injured.

Ben Chilwell has also not played this season after being banished to Chelsea's 'bomb squad' by Enzo Maresca.

The position was an issue for Gareth Southgate throughout Euro 2024 after Shaw suffered a setback that prevented him from returning to action until the quarter-finals.

Trippier filled in for him as a makeshift left back, starting each of England's first six games, before Shaw took his place for the final.
