United's Onana tries and fails to put City players off in pen shootout

Andre Onana saved just ONE in eight penalties in the Community Shield penalty shootout, despite his best efforts to distract City's kick takers.

It started so well for Onana, after he saved Man City's Bernado Silva's opening spot-kick, before watching teammate Dalot dispatch the next for United.

The Cameroonian keeper looked to have set the tone for the Red Devils' shootout, but failed to get a hand to another penalty.

It was his goal-line antics, however, that perhaps would underscore his downfall, as he tried to put-off players with hand gestures and faces, including Erling Haaland and Rueben Dias.

Pep Guardiola's men would ruthlessly dispatch their following seven penalties to United's six, with Ederson saving Jadon Sancho's spot-kick and the veteran Jonny Evans skying his.

Manchester United's Andre Onana tried his best to distract Man City's penalty takers

But his efforts perhaps didn't quite work, after saving just one in eight City spot-kicks

It's not the first time Onana has tried a similar approach to getting inside his opponents' heads, having been criticised for the same thing earlier THIS pre-seaon.

The stopper saved Kai Havertz's effort to hand United the advantage but he was unable to pull off similar heroics to deny centre back Gabriel.

Responding in brutal fashion after placing his effort in the direction Onana had pointed at, Gabriel scooped up the ball and told him to be quiet.

After conceding, a close-up camera shot showed the goalkeeper on his knees and gesticulating into thin air, visibly frustrated that his stunt had backfired.

An Arsenal fan account at the time, posted: 'For someone that shipped in 60+ goals last season, Andre Onana has shame and should keep his mouth shut.'

Onana has similarly drawn criticism from former United player, Paul Scholes, who said the keeper's overall style gives him cause for concern.

Speaking on football podcast, The Overlap, the United legend said: 'I still think there are areas of the pitch which are a problem for United.

'I still watch the goalkeeper [Andre Onana]. The goalkeeper is a big concern for me.

'I worry about the goalkeeper. Even watching a couple of the pre-season games. I worry to death about him.'

Paul Scholes has revealed the Manchester United star who is 'worrying him to death'

But speaking on what fans can expect from him over the coming season, the Cameroonian No 1 said that fans should expect him to take a risks.

'I think it's what you're going to see this season because I will take a lot of risks,' he said during United's pre-season tour of the USA.
