What Apple Should Copy From Google's Pixel Event video

The battle between Google and Apple just got hot again. Google showed off new phones and watches and A I tricks this week and dare I say it, Google is doing some things better than Apple. It sounds like a really big deal. Maybe. Try focusing on your breath, slow deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Wow, that was great. Uh Quite a unique experience. OK? Not everything was better. I mean, it seems Apple is still the cool one for now. Google's big pixel nine phone event. Certainly put pressure on Apple and I hope Apple is taking notes. That is if anyone takes notes anymore. I mean, I guess I hope Apple has an I summarize some notes in a week of Google news. Here's one more thing for Apple users. Let's talk about what Apple should copy from Google. Come on, they copy each other all the time. I'm Bridget Carey and this is one more thing. The new Google pixels are usually announced in October after the iphone. But this year, the pixel that came early and got ahead of the iphone. So Apple needs to not stumble in September to get folks excited about Apple Intelligence and convince us why it's worth upgrading to an iphone 16. After just hearing all the stuff Google bragged it could do but tech events are so different now because of A I it's no longer about getting on stage and telling us how the hardware is better. These companies are spending the whole time making the case for why A I software is worth paying for the upgrade. And not everyone cares about A I. We don't all want to have conversations with chat bots and I think Google knows it. Just listen to how the pixel event began. Tuesday. So I understand people's skepticism. There been so many promises, so many coming soons and not enough real world helpfulness when it comes to A I, which is why today we're getting real. All right, Google, some real talk about artificial computing. OK. So how does Google get real with live demos? Yes, live tech presentation demos are back, baby. This is exciting. Please. Google show us real examples of what it's like to use A I. Oh, looks like we had a little demo issue. Let me try one more time. Let's see if the demo spirits are with us today. No. Uh oh, looks like uh looks like they're not with us. All right. Let me, let me uh let me uh try that one more time on another device. Sorry about this folks. There we go. All right. Yeah. Thank you demo spirits. And now let's type in hot air balloon and wow. Oh, that's a little abstract. Ok. Yes, that is real. We saw it doesn't always work. That's ok. Live demos are messy, but more importantly, it's not fake. And staged tech companies have been acting like A I is magic for so long throwing in all these sparkle emoji icons at us that frankly, it's starting to feel like we're being sold snake oil. If you use A I, you're going to come into hiccups and tech companies should be honest or they will have customers that get really annoyed real fast by these unrealistic expectations. Just look at how Apple talked about A I at WW DC, the June developers conference. There was a pre tape presentation that highlighted all these cool things we could do some day but customers will not be seeing it roll out with the new iphones right away. If Apple believes in its A I as being truly helpful and it wants to convince me that I should upgrade to a new phone to experience it, then show me get brave, come back to doing live stage presentations and get me excited about what's possible. I want Apple to copy Google's live demos. However awkward it might be because if Google can say its A I is good enough for a live event that Apple should be confident with its A I and show us some tricks in real time. Ironically, A I is the reason we need more live demos. We are in an age where images and video are manipulated. It's hard to believe anything you see online. So the true authentic sales pitch of the future involves standing live in front of other humans. Most of Google's presentation was spent talking about Gemini A I tricks like Gemini live where you can have a conversation to ask questions of a chat bot. Now, Google says this is coming to I OS. So if you like that iphone users, you'll be able to try it. Now, for the most part, Gemini on Android was making a lot of the same promises as Siri with its Apple Intelligence to be able to look up in your email and it tells you how long it takes to get somewhere. Now we saw Gemini use the camera feed to analyze information. Now I didn't care for Apple to copy this. I could just do it faster by reading the information myself, but I can see that this possibly is helpful for the visually impaired. And what I did like was how Google handled screenshots. I take screenshots all the time to remind me of something. But on the pixel phones, there is a screenshots app to help you organize them all. And if you take a screenshot of a website, it's going to include a link to jump back to that website. That is a real time saver. If I need to find something again, Apple, we need that. Now, looking at the hardware, Google didn't make me feel like I needed a folding phone especially when it costs 18 $100. So I wouldn't want Apple to copy this idea without taking a better approach. But look at the pixel phones. The night photos on A pixel are better in panorama than on an iphone. So I'm going to need Apple to use those A I powers for better panoramic photos. After all, doesn't Apple want me taking more high quality panoramic photos for that vision. Pro what gave me the most android jealousy though was the pixel watch. It has two features I would love to see in the Apple watch. One is called hold a minute. Now if a phone call comes in and you're not ready to talk, you hit a button on the watch to answer it, but it's going to tell the other end that hey, the person needs you to hold on a minute and then you go step away to find a better place to talk. There are so many times that I don't have my phone with me and I have to do a little dick. Tracy move and it's hard to hear Apple. Give me a chance to tell the person calling to hold on. I'll be right there because that would actually be an assistant type thing to do. The other surprise on the watch is called loss of pulse detection. It's going to call emergency services with your location if you are unresponsive and your heart stops pumping. Apple is all about saving lives. How could Apple resist adding something like this? And you know what? It makes a stronger case for getting an Apple watch for elderly family members or anyone who lives alone. And there's one more superficial detail. I hope Apple copies. We need more colorful devices. Apple used to make everything colorful. So why are airpods so white and boring? The pixel buds Pro to have these candy colors and the nine phones come in a bright pink. Apple likes to save its bright colors for the entry level models. But I'm seeing pink in the Pro phones on the pixel line up. Apple needs a reminder that being pro doesn't mean you can't have some pop of pink. Uh Yes. Today I have one more, one more thing in this A I smartphone feature race. I do not want to see Apple copy everything Google does. Google showed us how Gemini live let's users have these free flowing conversations with the chatbot to give advice and I need tech companies to stop giving us computer voices that fake being alive. Hi there. I'm doing well. Thanks for asking. It's always nice to hear from someone Gemini live has 10 different voices to choose from and they each have little personality nuances. It sounds like how younger generations talk. It's super easy. Wait, I can find a few other ideas too. It looks super cool and trippy. Maybe some people need a fake friend but I want an assistant that gets to the point. There's just something cringey about a computer putting in filler words or telling me how it feels. I also was turned off by a new Gemini photo trick on pixel phones. It's called Add Me where you can take a photo, then add another person into that photo later after the first one was taken. So it's an easy way to fake that someone wasn't there. In the moment. Of course, Photoshop always exists. We know photos can be edited but this makes it so much easier to just harass people. Google's example was when you take a photo with a but what if that person who jumps in later makes a crude gesture to harass that original celeb in the photo or kids could use it to bully in school to create situations that never actually happened. No, thanks. I don't need phones to alter reality. It's hard enough to know what to trust online as it is just use a timer or get someone else to take the photo or get a wider angle lens on the selfie camera. Fake photos are a turn off. Yes, I am selfish and I want my iphone to absorb all the cool things happening in the mobile world today. But you know what Google also copies Apple, Google added satellite S OS it's similar to Apple's emergency S OS. So when you don't have a cellular signal, you can still call for help. Sometimes we all get the same features in the end, we just need a little patience less than a month until the big iphone 16 event. And hopefully that's also when we're going to hear what's next with the Apple watch 10. Let me know what you think of Apple's intelligence compared to Google's Gemini and the pixel lineup. And it's ok to share if there's something from Android that you wish Apple would include no judgment. It's a safe space. Thanks for watching. I'll catch you next week for one more thing.
