BGD Labs, a primary technical contributor to the decentralized finance protocol Aave, will cease its involvement with the project's Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) on April 1, marking the end of a four-year tenure.
In a statement, BGD cited an "asymmetric organizational scenario" and what it described as the DAO's "badly executed" approach to contributor expertise. The firm indicated that Aave had taken an "adversarial position" regarding its third version (v3) to prioritize features in the upcoming fourth version (v4).
BGD stated that continuing to focus on improving v3 would be hindered by "implicit/explicit artificial constraint," deeming it a "waste of our potential." Until April 1, BGD will continue its contributions to v3, chain expansions, security, and asset onboarding.
Looking ahead, BGD proposed a two-month, $200,000 security retainer for the community to consider as Aave seeks a replacement contributor. Since its inception in early 2022, BGD Labs has been largely dedicated to Aave, leading or collaborating on the development of various technical sub-systems within the protocol.
Reactions from Aave users have largely expressed concern over the loss of a significant contributor, with some users suggesting a need for greater structural clarity within the DAO. Aave founder and CEO Stani Kulechov acknowledged BGD's decision, stating, "The DeFi ecosystem is better for having a team like BGD in it."
