The illegal wildlife trade generates up to $23 billion annually, threatening one million species. On June 22, Google, Meta, TikTok, Alibaba, PayPal, Chainalysis, and TRM Labs announced their commitment to combat this issue with AI and blockchain. Convened by Prince William’s Royal Foundation during London Climate Action Week, the initiative aims to enhance detection of illicit wildlife listings and disrupt the financial flows fueling wildlife trafficking.
Tech platforms will leverage AI to preemptively remove illegal listings, while financial firms will analyze transactions to identify and flag suspicious patterns. Wildlife traffickers often use cryptocurrency to evade banking alerts, making blockchain analytics vital for tracing funds and facilitating law enforcement intervention. In addition, telecom operators and airlines will support AI monitoring and awareness campaigns.
For blockchain analytics companies, this initiative opens new markets, expanding their focus from financial crime compliance to environmental protection. Previous partnerships between tech firms and NGOs hint at ongoing commitments to wildlife protection.
