Metaplanet is issuing ¥8 billion, equivalent to $50 million, in zero-interest bonds to increase its Bitcoin holdings. The bonds mature in 2027, providing the company approximately one year to invest the capital into Bitcoin.
This funding could add an estimated 640 to 700 Bitcoin to Metaplanet's reserves, currently valued around $78,000 per coin. The Tokyo-listed company is Japan's largest corporate Bitcoin holder, possessing 40,177 BTC worth approximately $3.1 billion.
Metaplanet aims to reach 100,000 BTC by the end of this year and expand its holdings to 210,000 BTC by the close of 2027. This strategic accumulation continues despite a net loss of ¥95 billion ($619 million) for fiscal year 2025, primarily due to unrealized valuation declines.
In the first quarter of 2026, Metaplanet acquired an additional 5,075 BTC, valued at around $405 million. This aggressive strategy has led to an average acquisition cost of $104,106 per Bitcoin, which is above the current market price.
