The European Central Bank is seeking experts to help draft rules for integrating a digital euro into ATMs and card payment terminals. The initiative comes as the ECB prepares for potential legislative approval of a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
ECB President Christine Lagarde stated the bank has completed its technical work on the digital euro, with a possible rollout by 2029 if approved. One group will focus on how ATMs and point-of-sale terminals handle digital euro transactions, including offline capabilities.
Another team will develop a certification process for payment tools and infrastructure. Meanwhile, 12 European banks are advancing their own euro-pegged stablecoin project, Qivalis, set to launch in 2026.
