European fuel prices are up an average of 12% since US-Israel strikes on Iran in late February 2026, despite a fragile ceasefire. Petrol prices across the EU, compared between February 23 and April 20, rose from €1.64 to €1.83 per litre. Belgium, Czechia, and Bulgaria reported the steepest increases at 22%. France saw an 18% rise, Germany 15%, Italy 7%, and Spain 3%.
Diesel prices saw a more dramatic surge, increasing by 26% EU-wide from €1.59 to €2.01 per litre. Bulgaria led with a 43% rise, followed by France at 36%. Spain’s diesel prices rose 27%, Italy’s 24%, and Germany’s 23%.
As of April 20, the Netherlands had the highest petrol price at €2.28 per litre, while Malta had the cheapest at €1.34. The Netherlands also recorded the highest diesel price at €2.30 per litre, with Poland the next lowest at €1.64.
