Petrol and diesel prices across Europe have surged due to rising global oil costs linked to Middle East instability.

Taxes make up over half of petrol prices in most EU nations, averaging 52.1% across the bloc. Italy leads with 55% for petrol, followed by Germany (54.5%) and France (53%).

For diesel, the average tax share is 44.6%, with Italy at 51.1%-the highest in the EU.

In absolute terms, the Netherlands charges €1.24 per litre in taxes-highest in Europe-followed by Denmark, Germany, and France.

Euro-super 95 prices reach €2.26 in the Netherlands and €2.18 in Denmark, while Bulgaria offers the cheapest at €1.33 per litre.

Diesel prices top €2.26 in the Netherlands and €2.15 in Germany. In contrast, Malta and Bulgaria offer diesel for less than €1.50 per litre.

Environmental levies are included in many national excise duties, reflecting broader policy goals.

National tax rates, refining margins, and supply disruptions drive price differences across borders.
