The national average price of gas is holding at $4.51 per gallon, but analysts warn drivers could see another price hike as millions prepare for Memorial Day weekend.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, says markets remain sensitive to geopolitical events, especially after talks between President Trump and China's Xi Jinping failed to ease tensions with Iran. With global oil inventories tightening, any sustained oil price increase could push retail fuel prices higher in the coming weeks.

Regional differences are driven by state taxes, transportation distance, and retail competition. California leads the nation at $6.15 per gallon, followed by Washington at $5.77, Hawaii at $5.63, Oregon at $5.33, and Alaska at $5.28.

To save at the pump, experts recommend skipping premium gas, using price comparison apps like GasBuddy and Waze, signing up for grocery store fuel rewards, redeeming credit card points, and paying cash where stations offer discounts.
