British data intelligence startup StirlingX has raised $20 million in a Series A funding round. The capital will accelerate product development and support expansion into new markets.

The company, which designs and manufactures its drones and analytics software in Cambridge and Oxford, provides secure data solutions for critical national infrastructure and defense. Its clients include National Grid plc and Murphy.

StirlingX spun out from the venture studio GALLOS Technologies. In a significant move, Sir Jeremy Fleming, the former head of the UK's GCHQ, has been named chairman.

Founder and CEO Dean Jones said the funding positions StirlingX to compete for larger government contracts and build a sovereign data intelligence company.

Ventura Capital led the round, with participation from RCM Private Markets Master Fund. StirlingX will use the funds to grow its engineering team and develop products for high-risk environments.
